Background

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Family Law was passed through KI's community engagement process and ratified by Chief and Council in November 2019. In the Anishininiimowin language of KI, "Dibenjikewin" means family and "Onaakonikewin" means law. Therefore, KI Family Law is now known as "Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Dibenjikewin Onaakonikewin" or "KIDO" to be more grounded in KI's values on language preservation and revitalization.

KIDO is an exercise of KI's miinikozowin (inherent right) to self-governance and jurisdiction over dibenjikewinan (families) that are dashikewininiwak (KI Members) or are living within the lands of KI.

The vision of KIDO is to create a healthy self, healthy dibenjikewin, and a healthy community for every member of our KI Nation, with everyone working together in aspects to do this with saagihiiwewin (love) and kishewaadiziiwin (compassion).

The mission of KIDO is to revitalize KI values, principles, customs, language, and kayaash egwa mina ahchaako kikinohamaakewinan (traditional and spiritual teachings). These are our spiritual and legal obligations to our KI Nation, to carry-on building strong foundations for our dibenjikewinan just as our ancestors had done before us.

The kaa-iishi-niibawiijikaatekin (principles) of KIDO on keeping dibenjikewinan together will be carried out through support and guidance to ensure any challenges that oniikihiikoma/onihtaawikihaawaso (parents/caregivers) face with their awaashishag (children) and oshkaadizag (youth) are supported by the Maamao Dibenjikewin Kanawaabajikewin ("MDK") Service Model Workers. This support will also be carried out by extended dibenjikewinan members, other KI community members and others identified in KIDO, so that each oniikihiikomaak/onihtaawikihaawasook can fulfill their kanachitotamowin (sacred duty) to care for awaashishag and oshkaadizag.

Are you willing to open your home for Awaashishag and Oshkaadizag (Children and Youth)?

KIDO is going live on April 1, 2023, and we need the community to come together to help.

In Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug:

1. KIDO is immediately seeking Dashiikewinik Biidahki Kanawendaakosowinik (Community Safe Home)

  • In situations where awaashishag and oshkaadizag (children and youth) cannot go with another dibenjikewin (family) member, we are looking for a short term safe place, to ensure our awaashishag or oshkaadizag stay in the community.
  • Payment will be provided for volunteering.

2. KIDO is seeking Kanawenimaawasowinik (Foster Home)

  • Would be used on a longer term basis and odoobikihaawasook (foster parents) would need to complete a kabeshoowin naanaakajijikewin (home study).
  • Upgrade to homes will be funded for those who commit for a year.
  • Payment will be provided for operating costs and other financial supports.

Criteria for Dashiikewinik Biidahki Kanawendaakosowinik & Kanawenimaawasowinik

  • Provide awaashishag/oshkaadizag with a healthy and safe environment.
  • Provide nutritious food and a warm bed.
  • Communicate with and listen to awaashishag and oshkaadizag.
